The Pennsylvania Blues

House Republicans once viewed Pennsylvania as an electoral gold mine, rich with 2010 pickup opportunities. After the latest quarterly reports, however, the GOP probably needs to scale back its expectations.
Four Republican challengers running in competitive, GOP-friendly districts — former Butler City Councilman Mike Kelly, attorney Keith Rothfus, state Sen. Dave Argall and former U.S. Attorney Tom Marino — turned in surprisingly weak fundraising performances, leaving them underfunded against cash-flush Democratic incumbents Kathleen Dahlkemper, Jason Altmire, Tim Holden and Chris Carney, respectively.
The challengers’ flat fundraising is a sharp blow to Republican hopes of big gains in Pennsylvania — at one time a very real prospect, thanks to stellar candidate recruiting.
While the open 7th District and Kanjorski’s 11th District remain primed for pickup, it’s looking less and less likely that Republicans will be clawing back many of the seats they lost over the past two election cycles.
